Nightmare Carnival is a short animated film I created using traditional animation techniques in a digital landscape. Each frame component was hand drawn digitally using a pen tablet.
I animated this video using frame-by-frame animation techniques, drawing a new cel each time an element moved on screen. Using digital tools, this process changes drastically from the traditional animation process. I created numerous scenes separately and using video editing software was able to stitch it all together into a cohesive animation.
The story is simple, following a young boy as he attempts to escape a murderous clown in an abandoned carnival setting. He eventually outsmarts the clown and escapes, allowing for a bit of lighthearted comedy in an otherwise scary and grim setting.
This animation was created using Clip Studio Paint and Adobe Premiere Pro.
Pictured below is the original comic that this animation was based on. I created the short comic in an illustration course, and decided to expand upon it for a student film festival. I started with a small character study of the two featured characters and evolved from that into a short comic and then a short animation.
